However, when we will make a background check, mountain bicycles can be traced down to seventies. And if we are going to go deeper in its history, by 19th century there were already bikes of its kind. These were already considered as mountain bicycles way back then.
The record started with a faction of Buffalo Soldiers in August 1896. These soldiers used custom-made bicycles as they traveled back and forth to Missoula, Montana and Yellowstone.
Wondering why the history of mountain bikes is always linked to the seventies? It was because during that period when the first users of the said bikes were assembled together for a sport bicycling event. This sport was later recorded as the earliest downhill time tryout.
The present Repack Road in Fairfax, California is a historical place because an event was held here in 1976. Back then, standard downhill mountain bicycles were unavailable. Thus, personalized balloon-tired bicycles that come with gears and handlebars like that of BMX-style named as klunkers were used by riders. The bikers would take the road in different timing.
As the eighties entered, some companies discovered and built this kind of bicycle. And as the years passed by, new improved bicycles are being introduced. These bikes are more efficient and heavy-duty compared to bicycles of before.
Now, we observe some biking sports events anywhere across the globe. Some of these events are categorized as downhill, cross country, free ride, etc.
In 1988, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and Museum was created to recognize all the people including events behind mountain bicycles. You can visit this place at Crested Butte Colorado.
